The activation of the acute-phase reaction is mainly effected by cytokines. The endogenous pyrogens, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-1 (IL-1), adjust the set point of the body temperature regulation in the hypothalamus. At the cellular level, leukocytosis occurs with left-shifting (effect of granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor - GM-CSF), aggregation of platelets, edema and mast cell degranulation with release of mediators.
